Certified Organic
A good cup of coffee is one of life’s great pleasures that people have indulged in for hundreds of years. Unfortunately, conventionally grown coffee is one of the most chemically treated crops in the world. In its natural state, coffee has many health benefits, such as vitamins, nutrients, and anti-oxidants that can boost our immune systems. But harmful toxins in conventionally grown coffee can reduce these beneficial ingredients and damage our health over time.
Not only are the pesticides, herbicides, and other chemicals used in conventionally grown coffee toxic for us, but they are also very harmful for the environment. These chemicals end up in nearby bodies of water and impact the health of the flora and fauna, as well as the surrounding communities. Additionally, conventional growers will clear entire forests to maximise their crops, destroying habitats and ecosystems. These practices are simply not sustainable.
More than ever before, people are conscious of making good choices for their own health as well as the health of the planet. We want to make sure we are not contributing to the destruction of vital ecosystems. As people have become aware of these issues the demand for organic products has increased worldwide. More and more coffee lovers are making the switch to organic coffee. Organic coffee is free from harmful toxins and is grown in a sustainable way that respects the environment and all the creatures that depend on it.
To obtain Organic certification, growers and producers must agree to implement standards and practices set by international organisations. Some of The Canadian Organic Standards are:
- No chemical fertilizers or pesticides
- No irradiation
- No artificial colours, flavours, or preservatives
- No GMO – a product cannot be certified Organic if it contains GMO ingredients
Producers must also take sustainable steps to reduce soil erosion and depletion of nutrients and inspections are conducted regularly to ensure compliance.
At Granville Island Coffee Company, we believe sustainability is more than just a word. Whether it’s our Green Cup Pod Adapter™, or our compostable pods for use in single server coffee brewers, for us sustainability is an action. We only work with Canadian Certified Organic producers because organic is better for us and better for the environment. We believe organic coffee tastes better, too – cleaner and smoother – the way Nature intended.
